How to choose best domain name |
1. Make it short
When choosing the domain name for your website, the shorter names are better than the long ones. A domain name that is too long is difficult to remember and write for visitors. Word of mouth on your website is more effective if you have a domain name that is easy for people to remember and so they can talk about it to their close friends. Let the hard-to-write letters (such as x, k, w) be left out, unless they make sense for your website's brand.
2. That it be unique, but logical
Everyone wants their domain name to be unique and also easy to remember (see point 1). Take a look at the theme of your website and identify what it is about (Is it an arts and crafts website? Do you sell shoes ?, etc.). Then combine it with your own personal brand so that people know what your website is about, but also link it to you! For example: BelenArtesania.com or ShoesQuito.com.ec.
3. Decide if it should be international or local
If your intention is to aim to be international with your website, use an international extension (see point 4). However, if your business is done locally, a ccTLD (top-level country code domain) that matches your country will be fine. For example, if you have a small local boutique in Spain that has a domain that ends in .es, it will make more sense for people to search for you online. It will also be very helpful with the results of the local search engines! You can add the name of a place to your brand so that people know even more about what your website is about. Example: hotelfuerteaventura.es.
4. Decide on an international extension
If you decide to launch your website internationally, the three most common extensions are .com, .net and .org. If people do not know what extension your domain has, they are likely to try to write these three during the search of your website. All three are very similar: all of them can be used globally; They can be sent to the search engines and any person or company from any country can buy them. .com is the most popular and most used domain extension, while .org is usually used for organizations (especially non-profit organizations), and .net is often used for websites that have to do with with the networks. However, all three can be used, so you should decide based on what makes the most sense for your website!
5. Only letters (without numbers or hyphens)
Use the letters to prevent your domain name from being difficult to remember and write. Do not let yourself be tempted by the trends of fun domains that will no longer be fashionable in a year. Adding scripts to a domain name also makes it difficult to write. Be brief (point 1)! If you run a professional website and you represent a company, do not buy a domain with <name> 3.com or similar number that is fixed in the domain name unless it is really part of your company name.
6. Check if it is available
Once you decide on a domain, check if the domain is available for registration. You can do it through WHOIS, a database of registered domain names. If your name is available, you can register your domain name for FREE with Simple Site. If it is not available, try to combine the words in the name (for example, instead of hotelfuerteaventura.es use fuerteaventurahotel.es or vacacionesfuerteaventura.es, and so on).
